26 October 2026 · Weekly outlook

Paris: strong sales, practical risks

Art Basel Paris delivered encouraging early sales: Artnet reported more than 300 works sold for approximately $147 million during the first two preview days, based on figures compiled by the fair.

01

Early closure

The fair closed early, remaining shut on 24–25 October amid planned demonstrations. This updates the schedule reported in our previous issue and highlights the operational risks surrounding exhibitions and transactions.

02

Auction signal

Separately, Monet’s Iris achieved €50 million, including fees, at Sotheby’s Paris on 22 October. According to the auction house, this set a French auction record; it is not a benchmark for contemporary art generally.

03

VP view

Our reading is that strong headline demand can coexist with practical uncertainty. For contemporary collectors, opportunities should be sought in individual works with documented provenance, coherent artistic development and defensible prices—not inferred from exceptional sales. Works on paper and editions deserve consideration where authenticity, condition and edition details are clear.

Diversification and risk

Art may contribute to long-term wealth diversification, but resale can be slow and losses are possible. Commissions, transport, insurance and conservation affect the outcome; returns are not guaranteed.

Mr. Brainwash

Thierry Guetta · French, born 1966 · Based in Los Angeles

All works by this artist

Biography

Mr. Brainwash is the name adopted by Thierry Guetta, a French-born artist based in Los Angeles. After documenting the street-art scene and artists including Invader, Shepard Fairey and Banksy, he became the central figure in Banksy’s 2010 film Exit Through the Gift Shop. His practice combines screenprint, stencil, spray paint, collage and painting, reworking images from popular culture and art history through an optimistic visual language.

Exhibitions and presence

His public profile began with Life Is Beautiful in Los Angeles in 2008 and expanded through projects in New York, London and Miami. Artsy records an active programme of solo and group exhibitions and fair presentations, including Galerie Montmartre, Vision XR Gallery, In Arte Veritas, Frank Fluegel Gallery, Clarendon Fine Art and Taglialatella Galleries.

Publications and culture

Exit Through the Gift Shop introduced his trajectory to an international audience and received an Academy Award nomination for Documentary Feature. Mr. Brainwash also created the artwork for Madonna’s Celebration album; Artsy has featured his work in editorial coverage devoted to street art and market demand.

Market and collecting

Artsy identifies an active secondary market and records results reaching six figures for major works. The artist’s recognisable iconography, international gallery presence and mix of unique works and editions support broad collector visibility. Values nevertheless vary materially according to uniqueness, technique, size, year, condition, provenance and certificate: each work must therefore be assessed individually and should not be presented as a guaranteed investment.

Banksy

British · Identity undisclosed · Active since the 1990s

All works by this artist

Biography

Banksy is an anonymous British artist whose stencil-based interventions combine direct visual language, dark humour and political critique. Emerging from the Bristol street-art scene in the 1990s, he has addressed war, surveillance, consumerism, inequality and the institutional art system through murals, prints, installations, books and film.

Works and public presence

His interventions have appeared in Bristol, London, New York, Los Angeles, the West Bank and other international locations. Major projects include Turf War, Barely Legal, Banksy versus Bristol Museum, Dismaland and The Walled Off Hotel. His works have also entered major public and private collections, while unauthorised exhibitions must be distinguished from projects endorsed by the artist.

Publications and film

Banksy’s books include Banging Your Head Against a Brick Wall, Existencilism, Cut It Out and Wall and Piece. He directed Exit Through the Gift Shop, released in 2010 and nominated for the Academy Award for Documentary Feature. His official authentication body is Pest Control Office.

Market and collecting

Banksy has one of the most active secondary markets in contemporary art. Artsy records an auction high of £18.6 million at Sotheby’s in 2021. For editions, value depends decisively on signed or unsigned status, edition number, condition, provenance and a Pest Control certificate. These factors must be verified work by work; past results do not guarantee future returns.

Jeff Koons

American, born 1955 · Lives and works in New York

All works by this artist

Biography

Jeff Koons was born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1955 and trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since the late 1970s he has transformed familiar objects and images from consumer culture into precisely fabricated sculptures and paintings, exploring desire, taste, reflection and acceptance.

Exhibitions and presence

Koons’s work is held by institutions including MoMA, Tate, the Guggenheim and the Whitney. His 2014 Whitney retrospective travelled to the Centre Pompidou and Guggenheim Bilbao. Landmark presentations have also taken place at Versailles and in major galleries internationally.

Publications and editions

His practice is documented in extensive museum catalogues, monographs and interviews. Alongside monumental works, authorised editions produced with specialist makers such as Bernardaud bring his best-known imagery into a precisely controlled collectible format.

Market and collecting

Koons is among the most visible artists in the international contemporary market. For editions, value depends on authenticity, edition number, condition, provenance, certificate and completeness. Auction records for unique or monumental works are not directly comparable with porcelain editions, and past results do not guarantee future returns.

ZHERO

Young emerging artist · Contemporary abstract painting

All works by this artist

Artistic research

ZHERO is a young emerging artist whose practice develops through abstract painting, matter, rhythm and transformation. Acrylic colour becomes a field of tension between controlled gesture and visual disorder: layers, traces and chromatic contrasts record an evolving contemporary language rather than a fixed image.

Works and presence

Visual Poetry is building and documenting the artist’s archive through unique works on canvas and wood. The Kaotik, Confusion, Rain, Earth, Black Forest, Deep Sea and Fire groups trace a progression from energetic fragmentation towards increasingly structured, atmospheric compositions. Selected works are presented internationally through Visual Poetry and Artsy.

A developing contemporary project

The research is continuing with Enigma: A Life in Ten Acts, a planned cycle of ten unique, autonomous works connected by a continuous diagram. The project links origin, growth, fracture, resurgence and silence through matter, numbers and movement, strengthening the conceptual dimension of ZHERO’s painting.

Collecting a young artist

The interest of collecting an emerging artist lies in following a language while it is still developing. ZHERO’s works should be assessed through quality, coherence of the series, uniqueness, dimensions, condition, signature, certificate and archive record. This is an early-stage market: artistic relevance and documented provenance come before expectations of financial return.

Angelo Accardi

Italian, born 1964 · Figurative and contemporary painting

All works by this artist

Biography

Born in Sapri in 1964, Angelo Accardi is an Italian artist whose work studies people and the spaces they inhabit. He constructs recognisable interiors and urban settings, then disrupts them with animals, pop-cultural figures, quotations from art history, drips and painterly erasures. The result is a surreal, ironic tension between realism and visual displacement.

Exhibitions and presence

Accardi’s official chronology documents an international exhibition path from the 1990s onwards, with presentations in Rome, Milan, Munich, Madrid, Salzburg, London, New York, Miami, Dubai and other centres. It includes the 2011 Padiglione Italia at the 54th Venice Biennale and recurring exhibitions devoted to the Misplaced and Blend cycles.

Language and collections

His practice moves through the Underpressure, Misplaced and Blend bodies of work. Ostriches, pandas and other unexpected presences replace the conventional visitor and unsettle spaces associated with museums, galleries and daily life. The artist’s official website, exhibition chronology and digital archive provide the primary framework for documenting individual works.

Market and collecting

Accardi has an international gallery presence and an active primary and secondary market. A work’s position depends on cycle, date, uniqueness, dimensions, technique, condition, provenance, signature and documentation. The Official Archive is therefore especially relevant to identification and continuity of provenance; market visibility should not be presented as a guarantee of financial return.
